A promising way to improve membrane performance in wastewater treatments is surface modification. In this study, nano hybrid PES-ZnO membrane was modified through polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating on the membrane surface followed by glutaraldehyde aqueous solution treatments. The crosslinked PVA coating was expected to improve the anti-fouling behavior of the membrane. SEM, FT-IR spectroscopy, contact angle, porosity, and cross-flow filtration tests were carried out to investigate the effects of modifications on the membrane structural properties and performances. The SEM images showed that top layer of the membrane increased by the coating of PVA solution. FT-IR spectra also confirmed that the surface hydrophilicity of coated membrane was enhanced. The characterization of modified membranes revealed that the membrane coating significantly influenced the membrane structural and morphological properties. The decline of surface negative charge enhanced the removal of NH_4~+ from rubber wastewater. overall, the rejection of pollutants were enhanced however the permeate flux was slightly declined. The experimental results also proved that PVA coating modification was effective in improving the membrane anti-fouling property by the reducing the adsorptive-foulant deposition. Furthermore, the coating modification could effectively enhance the removal efficiencies performance with slight flux decline in wastewater treatment of natural rubber industries.
