Laser printing offers unique marking performance without putting force on the cable surface. Black cables have the best aging performance of all possible colors. However, laser printing of black polymer surfaces proofs to be tricky as the laser does not leave enough contrast on black to have readable fonts. A new recipe has been developed on the basis of low shrink bimodal HDPE, which has been established on the market for FOC cables in the past decade. The new formulation gives also excellent contrast for laser printing. Test series with different laser systems have shown that there is an optimal power density to get best contrast results. With too high intensity the marking turns brownish and is difficult to read under low light conditions. The optimal power intensity for the investigated system is actually relatively low and it ensures that the possible operating window is large. Abrasion resistance is excellent and the good weatherability of black jackets can be maintained
