A method for the treatment of a degenerative disorder of the nervous system comprising administering to a subject in need an effective amount of a composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient and an antibody that binds a peptide consisting of an amino acid sequence at least 89% identical to SEQ ID NO: 1, wherein said antibody inhibits fibrin gamma 377-395 (SEQ ID NO:1) specific binding to Mac-1, wherein the degenerative disorder of the nervous system involves leakage of fibrinogen perivascularly in the brain. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the antibody is a monoclonal antibody. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the antibody is an antigen-binding fragment selected from the group consisting of Fab, Fab', F(ab')2 and F(v). 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the antibody is chimeric. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the antibody is humanized. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the degenerative disorder of the nervous system is selected from the group consisting of multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, stroke and Alzheimer's Disease. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the amino acid sequence is at least 94% identical to SEQ ID NO:1. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the amino acid sequence is shown in SEQ ID NO:1. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the antibody is a human antibody.
