(CA1313663) BENZOXANZINONE COMPOUNDS AND HERBICIDAL COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE SAME A benzoxazinone compound represented by the formula (I): <IMG> (I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, and R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a cyanoalkyl group, an alkenyl group, an alkynyl group or an aralkyl group; a process for preparing the same; and a herbicidal composition comprising the benzoxazinone compound as an active component are disclosed.  The above benzoxazinone compounds exhibit a high selectivity for useful crop plants and a strong herbicidal activity with respect to various noxious weeds.

(CA1313663)  The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A benzoxazinone compound represented by the formula (I): [image] (I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, and R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, a cyanoalkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 3-5 carbon atoms, an alkynyl group having 3-5 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group having 7 or 8 carbon atoms. 2. A process for preparing a benzoxazinone compound represented by the formula (I"): [image] (I") wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkyl group, and R2 represents a C1-4 alkyl group, a cyano C1-3 alkyl group, a C3-5 alkenyl group, a C3-5 alkynyl group or a C7-8 aralkyl group, which comprises subjecting an oxazolidinedione compound represented by the formula (II): (I") wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkyl group, and R2 represents a C1-4 alkyl group, a cyano C1-3 alkyl group, a C3-5 alkenyl group, a C3-5 alkynyl group or a C7-8 aralkyl group, which comprises subjecting an oxazolidinedione compound represented by the formula (II): [image] (II) wherein R1 is as defined above, and R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, to a reduction of the nitro group thereof and, subsequently, to a condensation reaction between the resulting amino group and the ester group thereof to produce a benzoxazinone compound represented by the formula (I'): [image] (I') wherein R1 is as defined above, and reacting the resulting benzoxazinone compound with a compound represented by the formula R2'-Y (III) wherein R2' is as defined above, and Y represents a leaving group, in the presence of a base. 3. A process as claimed in claim 2, wherein said reduction of the nitro group of the oxazolidinedione represented by the formula (II) is carried out using reduced iron in acetic acid or a mixed solvent of acetic acid and ethyl acetate. 4. A process as claimed in claim 2, wherein said leaving group represented by Y is selected from the group consisting of iodine atom, bromine atom, chlorine atom, tolylsulfonyloxy group, phenylsulfonyloxy group and methylsulfonyloxy group. 5. A process as claimed in claim 2, wherein said base is selected from the group consisting of an alkyl lithium, an alkali metal hydride and an inorganic base. 6. A process for preparing a benzoxazinone compound represented by the formula (I): [image] (I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, and R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, a cyanoalkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 3-5 carbon atoms, an alkynyl group having 3-5 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group having 7 or 8 carbon atoms, which comprises reacting a carbamic ester represented by the formula (VI): [image] (VI) (VI) wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above, and R4 represents a lower alkyl group, with a base. 7. A process as claimed in claim 6, wherein said base is selected from the group consisting of a tertiary amine, an aromatic amine, an alkali metal alkoxide, an alkali metal hydride, an inorganic base and a carboxylic acid metal salt. 8. A herbicidal composition which comprising an agriculturally acceptable carrier or diluent and at least one of benzoxazinone compounds represented by the formula (I): [image] (I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, and R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, a cyanoalkyl group having 1 3 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 3-5 carbon atoms, an alkynyl group having 3-5 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group having 7 or 8 carbon atoms. 9. A herbicidal composition as claimed in claim 8, wherein said composition is in the form of a wettable powder, an emulsion, a dust preparation or a granule preparation.
