(EP3344582) 1. A subsea water processing system comprising at least one underwater membrane separation module (11-15) arranged in the feed line from a seawater or oil field produced water intake (4) to a water injection pump (5), characterized by an electrochemical acid-and-base generation unit (16) operable for on-site generation of high pH and low pH cleaning solutions using seawater or oil field produced water (17) in an electrochemical process, and acid or base flow lines (18, 19) and valves (20, 21) connecting the acid/base generation unit (16) on-site with the underwater membrane separation module(s) of the water injection system for supply of high pH and low pH cleaning solutions for circulation through at least one underwater membrane separation module during a membrane cleaning cycle. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid or base flow lines (18, 19) connect the electrochemical unit (16) with at least one subsea process apparatus on-site, the at least one subsea process apparatus is selected from the group consisting of heat exchangers, components of the hydrocarbon production system, pipelines, injection or production wells, pumps for injecting acid into the reservoir for reservoir stimulation, and water injection systems. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid-and-base generation unit (16) is operable to produce high pH solution having a pH higher than 9.5, and the acid-and-base generation unit (16) is operable to produce low pH solution having a pH lower than 4. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid/base generation unit (16) is an electrolysis unit without membranes. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid/base generation unit (16) is an electrolysis unit with membranes. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid/base generation unit (16) is a bipolar membrane electro-dialysis (BPED) unit. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid/base generation unit (16) is a bipolar membrane electro-dialysis unit with 2-compartment design or 3-compartment design. 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid/base generation unit (16) can supply low pH solution for injection into the reservoir formation for hydrocarbon production stimulation. 9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a nano-filtration stage (40) and/or an ion exchange unit (50) operable to treat the feed water to the electrochemical unit (16) such that the feed water to the electrochemical unit has a combined Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions level below 10,000 mg/L, preferably below 5000 mg/L, more preferably below 200 mg/L, more preferably below 50 mg/L, and even more preferably below 10 mg/L. 10. The system of claim 1, further comprising a nano-filtration stage (40) operable to treat the feed water to the electrochemical unit (16) with nanofiltration, and/or an ion exchange unit (50) operable to treat the feed water to the electrochemical unit (16) with ion exchange to substantially remove Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. 11. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid/base generation unit (16) is, via a hydraulic circuit (23), hydraulically connected to a boosting pump (3) feeding seawater or oil field produced water through the underwater membrane separation module(s) in normal operation and optionally feeding acid or base cleaning solution through at least one underwater membrane separation module during a membrane cleaning cycle. 12. The system of claim 1, wherein the acid/base generation unit (16) is via a hydraulic circuit (23) connected on-site with at least one underwater membrane separation module (11-15) including any of an underwater coarse filter membrane (CF), a multiple media filter membrane (MMF), a microfiltration filter membrane (MF), an ultrafiltration filter membrane (UF), a nanofiltration filter membrane (NF) or a reverse osmosis filter membrane (RO). 13. The system of claims 1, wherein the acid/base generation unit (16) is via a hydraulic circuit (23) connected on-site to at least one underwater membrane separation module (11-15) including any of a single-bore or multi-bore hollow fibre membrane, a plate-and-frame membrane, a tubular membrane, or a spiral wound membrane.
