(US20170191147) The subject invention provides compositions of a family of magnesium alloys for various applications including but not limited to automotive, aerospace, and biomedical applications.  Preferred embodiments provide that this family of alloys comprises elements readily available domestically while offering improved mechanical properties at approximately half the cost of similar commercial alloys that comprise rare earth (RE) elements.  Advantageously, utilization of these new magnesium alloys in car engine parts would lead to better fuel economy and in turn, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and environmental damages from vehicles.
