(EP1289553) 1. A NRG-2 polypeptide consisting of the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 4. 2. The polypeptide of claim 1 for use in therapy. 3. A nucleic acid molecule either: a) consisting of a sequence encoding a polypeptide consisting of the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 4; or b) consisting of the nucleic acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 3. 4. A nucleic acid molecule consisting of a sequence that is antisense to the coding strand sequence of the nucleic acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 3, wherein the sequence that is antisense to the coding strand sequence of the nucleic acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 3 is over at least 50 nucleotides. 5. The nucleic acid molecule of claim 4, wherein the sequence that is antisense to the coding strand sequence of the nucleic acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 3 is over at least 60 nucleotides, 75 nucleotides or 110 nucleotides. 6. A vector wherein the vector contains a recombinant DNA sequence, wherein the DNA sequence comprises a NRG-2 polypeptide-encoding sequence operably linked to a promoter, and wherein the NRG-2 encoding sequence consists of SEQ ID NO: 3. 7. A cell comprising the vector of claim 6. 8. The nucleic acid molecule of claim 3, claim 4 or claim 5, the vector of claim 6 or the cell of claim 7 for use in therapy. 9. A non-human transgenic animal comprising the vector of claim 6. 10. A non-human transgenic animal which comprises a knockout mutation in one or both alleles encoding the NRG-2 polypeptide consisting of the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO 4. 11. A cell from the non-human transgenic animal of claim 9 or 10. 12. An ex vivo method for increasing the mitogenesis, survival, or growth of a cell which expresses an erbB receptor that is selective for a NRG-2 polypeptide consisting of the sequence of SEQ ID NO: 4, wherein the cell is a neuronal cell, a Schwann cell, an oligodendrocyte, an O-2A progenitor cell, a glial cell, or an olfactory bulb ensheathing cell or a muscle cell. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein said erbB receptor is selected from an erbB4 homodimer, an erbB2/erbB4 heterodimer, and an erbB1/erbB3 heterodimer. 14. The method of claim 12 or claim 13, wherein the cell is a neuronal cell or a muscle cell. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein a) said neuronal cell is a dopaminergic neuron or an external granule neuron; or b) said muscle cell is a myoblast, a myocyte, or a cardiac muscle cell. 16. The method of claim 12, wherein the cell is an oligodendrocyte, an O-2A progenitor cell, or an olfactory bulb ensheathing cell. 17. An ex vivo method for stimulating mitogenesis of a glial cell by administering NRG-2 polypeptide consisting of the sequence of SEQ ID NO: 4 to the cell. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said glial cell is selected from oligodendrocytes, myelinating glia, and olfactory bulb ensheathing cells. 19. An ex vivo method for inducing myelination of a neuronal cell by a glial cell by administering NRG-2 polypeptide consisting of the sequence of SEQ ID NO: 4 to the cells. 20. An ex vivo method for increasing cardiomyocyte survival, cardiomyocyte proliferation, or cardiomyocyte growth by administering NRG-2 polypeptide consisting of the sequence of SEQ ID NO: 4 to the cardiomyocyte. 21. A recombinant NRG-2 polypeptide for use in the treatment or prophylaxis of a pathophysiological condition of the nervous system, wherein said NRG-2 polypeptide is a sequence consisting of SEQ ID NO: 4, wherein said pathophysiological condition is selected from the group consisting of: multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, and spinal cord injury. 22. The polypeptide of claim 21, wherein the pathophysiological condition is multiple sclerosis. 23. The polypeptide of claim 21, wherein the pathophysiological condition is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. 24. The polypeptide of claim 21, wherein the pathophysiological condition is Parkinson's Disease. 25. The polypeptide of claim 21, wherein the pathophysiological condition is spinal cord injury. 26. A purified recombinant NRG-2 polypeptide producing cell for use in the treatment or prophylaxis of a pathophysiological condition of the nervous system, wherein the cell produces the polypeptide of claim 1. 27. The purified recombinant NRG-2 polypeptide producing-cell of claim 26, wherein said NRG-2 polypeptide-producing cell contains a recombinant DNA sequence, wherein said DNA sequence comprises a NRG-2 polypeptide-encoding sequence operably linked to a promoter, and wherein the NRG-2 encoding sequence consists of SEQ ID NO: 3. 28. A NRG-2 polypeptide for use in the treatment or prophylaxis of a pathophysiological condition by increasing cardiomyocyte survival, cardiomyocyte proliferation, or cardiomyocyte growth in a human, wherein the NRG-2 polypeptide consists of the sequence of SEQ ID NO: 4 and further wherein the pathophysiological condition is selected from the group consisting of: cardiomyopathy, ischemic damage, cardiac trauma, and heart failure. 29. The polypeptide or cell of any one of claims 1, 2, 3, 7 and 21 to 28, wherein said NRG-2 polypeptide is encoded by the nucleic acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 3. 30. An ex vivo method of diagnosing an increased likelihood of developing a cardiovascular disease in a human, said method comprising analyzing nucleic acid molecules of said human to determine whether said human contains a mutation in a gene that encodes a polypeptide consisting of the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 4, wherein the presence of said mutation is an indication that said test subject has or has an increased likelihood of developing the cardiovascular disease.
