(EP-292948) A spun-bonded, preferably paper-like, polyolefin sheet (1) or fleece composed of heat and pressure bonded minute polyolefin fibres which is vapour- and gas-pervious but impervious to liquid water and dust, naturally water-resistant and of high tensile and tear strength, is rendered heat-weldable. The material is used for making an applicator for releasing volatile substances, e.g. phosphine derived from metal phosphides at a controlled rate and with complete protection of the contents against liquid water. Excessive local phosphine build-up is avoided. The release rate is controlled by the sheet material itself and by its available surface area. A heat weldable sheet material (1), in particular for the above purposes, is coated, preferably by powder sprinkle coating with a thermoplastic highly porous heat welding bonding layer (2), e.g. EVA, melting so much lower (say 30 to 80 DEG C lower) than the polyolefin fibres that a heat welding seam (6) forms before the fibres melt so that the physical properties of the polyolefin fibres and the gas permeability are substantially retained.

Applicator device for holding and slow release of a gas-evolving or vapour-evolving agent or substance, preferably with pesticidal activity, to an environment comprising a container for holding a pest control agent formed at least in part of a plastic fleece material, characterized in that the plastic fleece material is substantially imprevious to pressure-less liquid water and has a water vapour permeability from 50 to 1000 g/m**2/24 h. 2. Applicator device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the water vapour permeability is from 300 to 1000 g/m**2/24 h, preferably from 500 to 750 g/m**2/24 h, e.g. 600 to 630 g/m**2/24 h. 3. Applicator device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 2, characterized in that it comprises at least one layer or portion of a spun bonded, preferably paper-like polyolefin sheet material (1, 2, 3) composed of preferably heat and pressure bonded minute polyolefin fibres which is coated at least in the heat welded areas with a thermoplastic highly porous (3) heat welding bonding layer (2), having a melting point or region so much lower than that of the polyolefin fibres that conventional welding with heat and pressure results in a welding seam before the fibres reach their melting point so that the physical properties of the polyolefin fibres are substantially retained. 4. Applicator device as claimed in one or more of the claims 1 to 3, comprising at least two sheets of sheet material bonded together by heat welded welding seams to form a pocket or pockets for containing the substance from which vapours or gases are to be released, preferably one sheet being composed of the spun-bonded polyolefin sheet (1, 1''') of fleece and another sheet is composed of a suitable thermoplastic foil or film (31) weldable to the former and having a melting point or region sufficiently lower than that of the spunbonded polyolefin sheet (1''') to permit heat welding of the former to the latter substantially without damage to the latter and preferably without damage to the latter and preferably without an additional bonding layer. 5. Applicator as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 4 in the form of individual sachets (Figs. 7 to 11) or in the form of bag blankets (Figs. 2 to 5). 6. Applicator as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 5 characterized in that the sachets or pockets (7) contain a metal phosphide pest control agent (8), for example wherein the agent is based on aluminium phosphide, magnesium phosphide, calcium phosphide or more than one of these. 7. Applicator as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 6, characterized in that the agent is technical aluminium phosphide or technical magnesium phosphide or a mixture of these essentially without additives or alternatively containing not more than a hydrophobising amount of a hydrophobising agent, e.g. about 3 % solid paraffin, preferably being impregnated therewith. 8. Applicator as claimed in claim any one of the claims 1 to 7, characterized in that the rate of gas or vapour-release is controlled by restricting the available gas-pervious surface area (33; 34) of the sheet material per unit of the mass of the composition enclosed in the applicator means, preferably wherein the available gas pervious surface area is restricted by making the applicator means partly (e.g. on one side or portion thereof) of sheet material (1, 2, 3) as defined in claim 1 and for the remainder of a different but compatable sheet material (31) having little or no gas and vapour permeability, e.g. a dense thermoplastic foil, or, wherein the available gas pervious surface area is restricted by coating a predetermined proportion (32) of the gas-pervious surface area with a coating of little or no permeability. 9. Applicator as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 8, characterized in that it is packed for storage and transport in a gas- and moisture-proof container (21). 10. Applicator as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 9, characterized in that it is in the form of a belt device (40) comprising a plurality of sachets or pockets (47) connected end to end by hinge-like flexible regions (44, 45, 44mn) of the belt, one end of the belt being folded over and fixed to form a loop (41) which accomodates a stirrup device (42) for the insertion of the belt into bulk commodities and the opposite end of the belt comprising a loop device (49) for subsequent withdrawal of the belt. 11. Applicator as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 10 for use for volatile substances other than pesticides contained in the applicator means, e.g. air freshener substances, scents, or insect or animal repellants. 12. Heat weldable plastic sheet material comprising a spun-bonded, preferably paper-like, polyolefin sheet or fleece composed of preferably heat and pressure bonded minute polyolefin fibres which is vapour- and gas-pervious but impervious to liquid water and dust, naturally water-resistant and of high tensile strength, characterized in that it (1) is coated at least in areas and on a side to be heat-welded with a thermoplastic highly porous (3) heat welding bonded layer (2) having a melting point or region so much lower than that of the polyolefin fibres that conventional welding with heat and pressure results in a welding seam before the fibres reach their melting point so that the physical properties of the polyolefin fibres are substantially retained. 13. Material as claimed in claim 12, characterized in that the whole of one side is thus coated (2, 3) and wherein the permeability to moisture of the bonding layer is of an order of magnitude substantially higher than that of the polyolefin sheet, or wherein only regions (36) to be heat-welded are thus coated. 14. Material as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 13, characterised in that the difference in melting points or melting regions between the polyolefin fibres (1) and the bonding layer (2, 3) is more than 20 DEG.C, preferably from 30 - 80 DEG.C, more preferably from 40 DEG.C to 70 DEG.C, in particular from 50 to 60 DEG.C. 15. Material as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 14, characterised in that the polyolefin sheet (1) is made from 100% high density polyethylene fibres by an integrated spinning and bonding process, formed by spinning very fine polyethylene fibres, each in practice approximately 0,005 mm in diameter and laying these down as a random network, the fibres then being bonded together with heat and pressure. 16. Material as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 15, characterised in that the bonding layer has been applied by sprinkling the bonding substance (2) in powder form onto a supporting surface and fusing the substance onto that surface so that a high porosity is retained, for example, in that the powder has been sprinkle-coated directly onto the polyolefin sheet (1) followed by fusing at a temperature below the melting point or melting region of the fibres of the sheet, or in that the bonding layer has been applied by reverse coating. 17. Material as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 16, characterised in that the amount of bonding layer (2, 3) is 10 to 50 g/m**2, more particularly 15 to 40 g/m**2 and preferably approximately 30 g/m**2. 18. Material as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 17, wherein the material of the bonding layer (2, 3) is ethylene vinyl acetate or polyethylene.
