(WO200071183) WHAT IS CLAIMED IS: 1. An antimicrobial article comprising a coating, said coating comprising a fatty acid monoester and an enhancer, wherein said fatty acid monoester and said enhancer are present in an amount effective to kill at least 99.9% of microorganisms. 2. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said fatty acid monoester is glycerol monolaurate, glycerol monocaprylate, glycerol monocaprate, propylene glycol monolaurate, propylene glycol monocaprylate, or propylene glycol monocaprate. 3. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said enhancer is a chelating agent or an organic acid. 4. The antimicrobial article of claim 3, wherein said organic acid is selected from the group consisting of lactic acid, tartaric acid, adipic acid, succinic acid, citric acid, ascorbic acid, malic acid, mandelic acid, acetic acid, sorbic acid, benzoic acid, and salicylic acid. 5. The antimicrobial article of claim 3, wherein said organic acid is lactic acid or mandelic acid. 6. The antimicrobial article of claim 3, wherein said chelating agent is sodium acid pyrophosphate, acidic sodium hexametaphosphate, or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and salts thereof. 7. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said article is a nonwoven material. 8. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said article is a woven fabric or web material, a sponge material, a fibrous batt material, or a foam material. 9. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said coating further comprises a surfactant. 10. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said microorganisms comprise Gram positive or Gram negative bacteria. 11. The antimicrobial article of claim 1 , wherein said microorganisms comprise viruses or fungi. 12. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said fatty acid monoester and said enhancer are present in an amount effective to kill at least 99.99% of microorganisms. 13. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said article has increased hydrophilicity as compared with a corresponding article lacking said fatty acid monoester. 14. The antimicrobial article of claim 1, wherein said article is a surgical drape or gown, a face mask, a wound dressing, a disposable diaper, filter media, a cast padding, a stockinette, a respirator, food packaging, dental floss, a sponge, textiles, or a wipe. 15. A surgical drape comprising a coating, said coating comprising a fatty acid monoester and an enhancer, wherein said fatty acid monoester and said enhancer are present in an amount effective to kill at least 99.9% of microorganisms. 16. The surgical drape of claim 15, said coating further comprising a surfactant. 17. A face mask comprising a coating, said coating comprising a fatty acid monoester and an enhancer wherein said fatty acid monoester and said enhancer are present in an amount effective to kill at least 99.9% of microorganisms. 18. The face mask of claim 17, said coating further comprising a surfactant. 19. A method of making an antimicrobial article, said method comprising treating said article with an antimicrobial composition, wherein said composition comprises 0.001 wt. % to 30 wt. % of a fatty acid monoester and 0.001 wt. % to 85 wt. % of an enhancer; and drying said treated article, wherein said antimicrobial article is effective for killing at least 99.9% of microorganisms. 20. The method of claim 19, wherein said fatty acid monoester comprises 0.01 wt. % to 5.0 wt. % of said antimicrobial composition. 21. The method of claim 19, wherein said enhancer comprises 0.5 wt. % to 5.0 wt. % of said antimicrobial composition. 22. The method of claim 19, wherein said antimicrobial composition further comprises 0.001 wt. % to 30 wt. % of a surfactant. 23. The method of claim 22, wherein said surfactant comprises 0.5 wt. % to 5.0 wt. % of said antimicrobial composition. 24. A method of making an antimicrobial article, said method comprising treating said article with a first composition comprising 0.001 wt. % to 30 wt. % of a fatty acid monoester; treating said article with a second composition comprising 0.001 wt. % to 85 wt. % of an enhancer; and drying said treated article, wherein said antimicrobial article is effective for killing at least 99.9% of microorganisms. 25. The method of claim 24, wherein said fatty acid monoester comprises 0.01 wt. % to 5.0 wt. % of said first composition. 26. The method of claim 24, wherein said enhancer comprises 0.5 wt. % to 5.0 wt. % of said second composition. 27. The method of claim 24, wherein said first composition further comprises 0.001 wt. % to 30 wt. % of a surfactant. 28. The method of claim 27, wherein said surfactant comprises 0.5 wt. % to 5.0 wt. % of said first composition.
