During 1999, a biological monitoring study was conducted at foursites along the Ligurian coast (Cornigliano, Voltri, Vado Ligure andSanremo). At each site the concentration And composition of polcyclicaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were investigated in native and cagedmussels. The mussels (mytilus galloprovincialis), sampled in theSpring and the Autumn, showed different accumulation patternsaccording to the source of pollution they were exposed to. The PAHconcentrations were higher in the native than in The caged mussels. The coastal sites were classified ac- Cording to PAH concentrationsfound in mussel tissue Samples: Native mussels: VadoLigure<Voltri<San- Remo<=Cornigliano, Caged mussels: VadoLigure=Voltri=San- Rem<<Cornigliano.
