What is claimed is:
1. 
A method comprising: delivering a radiation source comprising an electron beam to a hydrocarbon-containing formation comprising oil shale; 

irradiating at least a portion of the formation using the radiation source to deliver to the portion of the formation at least 0.5 megarads of radiation; and 

producing a hydrocarbon-containing material from the irradiated formation.
2. The method of claim 1 further comprising thermally treating the irradiated formation to extract the hydrocarbon-containing material therefrom.
3. The method of claim 2 wherein thermally treating comprises treating with steam.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein exposing the hydrocarbon to radiation reduces the molecular weight by at least about 25%.
5. The method of claim 4 wherein the hydrocarbon initially has a molecular weight of from about 300 to about 2000, and after irradiation the hydrocarbon has a molecular weight of from about 190 to about 1750.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein the source of radiation is configured to generate bremssthrahlung x-rays.
7. The method of claim 6 wherein the source of radiation comprises an electron gun used in combination with a metal foil.
8. The method of claim 7 wherein the metal foil comprises a tantalum foil.
9. The method of claim 1 wherein the energy dose applied to the formation is 10 Mrad or more.
10. The method of claim 1 wherein the energy dose applied to the formation is 20 Mrad or more.
11. A method comprising: delivering a radiation source comprising an electron beam to a hydrocarbon-containing formation comprising oil shale; 

irradiating at least a portion of the formation using the radiation source; 

thermally treating the irradiated formation with steam to extract the hydrocarbon-containing material therefrom; and 

producing a hydrocarbon-containing material from the formation.
12. The method of claim 11 wherein the source of radiation is configured to generate bremssthrahlung x-rays.
13. The method of claim 12 wherein the source of radiation comprises an electron gun used in combination with a metal foil.
14. The method of claim 13 wherein the metal foil comprises a tantalum foil.
15. The method of claim 11 wherein the energy dose applied to the formation is 10 Mrad or more.
16. The method of claim 11 wherein the energy dose applied to the formation is 20 Mrad or more.
17. A method comprising: delivering a radiation source comprising an electron beam to a hydrocarbon-containing formation comprising oil shale, the electron beam being configured to generate bremssthrahlung x-rays; 

irradiating at least a portion of the formation using the radiation source; and 

producing a hydrocarbon-containing material from the formation.
18. The method of claim 17 wherein the energy dose applied to the formation is 10 Mrad or more.
19. The method of claim 17 wherein the energy dose applied to the formation is 20 Mrad or more.
